Summary

A fine exclusive edition of one of literature’s most beloved stories。 Featuring a laser-cut jacket on a textured book with foil stamping, all titles in this series will be first editions。 No more than 10,000 copies will be printed, and each will be individually numbered from 1 to 10,000。

It was one of those spring days which possesses so much sweetness and beauty, that all Paris turns out into the squares and promenades and celebrates them as though they were Sundays。

A mad priest, a vagabond playwright, a social-climbing soldier, and a misshapen bell-ringer—all are captivated and intrigued by a gypsy girl's beauty and charm。 Who will betray her, and who will remain loyal, even beneath the shadow of the gallows? This motley group of outlaws finds sanctuary within the walls of medieval Paris' greatest monument, the grand Cathedral of Notre Dame。

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Seasons Edition--Spring) is one of four titles available in March 2021。 The spring season also will include Emma, The Secret Garden, and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes。

“When a man understands the art of seeing, he can trace the spirit of an age and the features of a king even in the knocker on a door。” This one took a while to read。 It's very long, but I knew that going in。 I did not expect the first, oh, 375 pages to have so little happening。 The story does take off in the second half of the book。 Until then it's a lovely travelogue of Parisian architecture in 15th-century Paris。 If that's your thing, read this。I don't ever read abridged versions, but I have “When a man understands the art of seeing, he can trace the spirit of an age and the features of a king even in the knocker on a door。” This one took a while to read。 It's very long, but I knew that going in。 I did not expect the first, oh, 375 pages to have so little happening。 The story does take off in the second half of the book。 Until then it's a lovely travelogue of Parisian architecture in 15th-century Paris。 If that's your thing, read this。I don't ever read abridged versions, but I have to admit if there had been one on my shelf, I'd have opted for it during those first few hundred pages。 But the climax of the story is spectacular and made it worth the slog to get there。 。。。more

Somewhere in this book is a good story but WOW were there so many pages of description that bored me so much。 I wanted to give up reading so many times。

I'm not sure if I was more familiar with France and Paris if I would enjoy this more, but much of the author's descriptions of geography and architecture fell very flat to me and took up way too much of the book。 It was also quite hard to keep up with all the passing references to many characters who played little part in the story。 Perhaps overall it means more to the French due to some of this, but as someone not really tied to the culture I don't find it very compelling。As far as the performa I'm not sure if I was more familiar with France and Paris if I would enjoy this more, but much of the author's descriptions of geography and architecture fell very flat to me and took up way too much of the book。 It was also quite hard to keep up with all the passing references to many characters who played little part in the story。 Perhaps overall it means more to the French due to some of this, but as someone not really tied to the culture I don't find it very compelling。As far as the performance of the reader: I finally decided to turn the speed up to 1。25x about 2/3 of the way through and wish I had done it earlier; even sped up, there were only a few times I thought the reader spoke very quickly。 His slow delivery and many pauses didn't help a ponderous story to move along very well。 。。。more

The biggest surprise of my classic gothic romance novel marathon was this。 Cultural sanitisation has hit it harder even than Wuthering Heights。 It's a richly atmospheric black magic horror show with a beautiful fatal ending every adaptation I've seen has wimped out on。 The biggest surprise of my classic gothic romance novel marathon was this。 Cultural sanitisation has hit it harder even than Wuthering Heights。 It's a richly atmospheric black magic horror show with a beautiful fatal ending every adaptation I've seen has wimped out on。 。。。more

Still a good/great story but encumbered with much else that is either overwrought or lost to time。 Unless you are equally obsessed with late medieval architecture, it’s a real chore to read。

I was about to give this book no more than one or two stars due to Hugo's tendency to go on long, boring and frankly unnecessary ramblings about Paris, random buildings that I don't care about and French state finances from 600 years ago。 But I must say I loved the last 50 pages of the book, which were fully dedicated to the main plot。 This book might have been a lot more interesting and enjoyable to me if it were 300 pages shorter。 But everyone's taste is different。 If you would like to learn m I was about to give this book no more than one or two stars due to Hugo's tendency to go on long, boring and frankly unnecessary ramblings about Paris, random buildings that I don't care about and French state finances from 600 years ago。 But I must say I loved the last 50 pages of the book, which were fully dedicated to the main plot。 This book might have been a lot more interesting and enjoyable to me if it were 300 pages shorter。 But everyone's taste is different。 If you would like to learn more about late-medieval Paris' society and architecture this book is for you。 。。。more

the elements of tragic irony are beautiful and brilliant in The hunchback of notre dame。 the writing is beautiful in a good few chapters and the descriptions of the setting, architecture and other things are also wonderful - you can clearly see that its a very well researched book。 that being said, most of the characters are only mildly interesting as they lack depth and the book itself flatlines a lot past the halfway mark。 i found myself struggling to finish it simply because i was losing inte the elements of tragic irony are beautiful and brilliant in The hunchback of notre dame。 the writing is beautiful in a good few chapters and the descriptions of the setting, architecture and other things are also wonderful - you can clearly see that its a very well researched book。 that being said, most of the characters are only mildly interesting as they lack depth and the book itself flatlines a lot past the halfway mark。 i found myself struggling to finish it simply because i was losing interest。 its unnecessarily long and overly descriptive in many chapters。 the novel had many enjoyable and unenjoyable aspects and overall, i did enjoy a lot of it but its not something id rush to recommend。 。。。more

i finally did it! it only took me a year。 it's a beautiful story, but considering how long it took me to read it the first time, its safe to say I won't be rereading it for a long while。 i took one star off because it's pretty boring at some parts because Hugo loves to drone on about architecture, but otherwise, fantastic story。 i finally did it! it only took me a year。 it's a beautiful story, but considering how long it took me to read it the first time, its safe to say I won't be rereading it for a long while。 i took one star off because it's pretty boring at some parts because Hugo loves to drone on about architecture, but otherwise, fantastic story。 。。。more

A Beautiful Cathedral, An Okay Story"The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" is interesting in that the purported main plot isn't the main point of the novel。 In reality, it is a love letter to the titular cathedral, describing it in great detail and lamenting the disrepair and disrespect it had lately been subjected to。 Victor Hugo is an admirer of the old style of architecture that built the Notre-Dame cathedral, a sentiment I share。 The story of Quasimodo and La Esmeralda is less interesting to me, howe A Beautiful Cathedral, An Okay Story"The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" is interesting in that the purported main plot isn't the main point of the novel。 In reality, it is a love letter to the titular cathedral, describing it in great detail and lamenting the disrepair and disrespect it had lately been subjected to。 Victor Hugo is an admirer of the old style of architecture that built the Notre-Dame cathedral, a sentiment I share。 The story of Quasimodo and La Esmeralda is less interesting to me, however。 It shares some elements of Gothic horror classics like Frankenstein, such as Quasimodo's isolation and frustration with the world。 This book, however, is worth reading to understand French literature and to appreciate one of the wonders of European architecture。 。。。more
